CTIE has been formally closed as a centre, but the staff are still active - please see ECSE Research web pages for more up to date information.

Next Generation Internet (IPv6 and beyond) Research

IPv6 RESEARCH

  • Our research focus falls within the realm of the worldwide research effort, which aims to create the IPv6 based next-generation telecommunication networks. We principally aim at advancing Mobile IPv6 handover optimization standards, and IPv6 based video client/server tools in an effort to enhance the capabilities of mobile/cellular networks for supporting real-time communications.
  • Another major area of research is simulation of networks - both IPv6 (and variations on Mobile IPv6, wireless and ad-hoc/mesh networks) specific and large networks in general.
  •

As part of its ATcrc commitment, the CTIE team has been heavily involved with standardization activities within the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF). The IETF is the principle body for development of Internet Standards, and is currently working toward the standardization and adoption of the Next Generation Mobile Internet Protocols (Mobile IPv6).

Our team has been contributing to standards forums, and developing new potential standard technology. This has tangible outputs in the form of 'Internet Drafts'. These are documents that are used as input to the standardization process. Internet Drafts involving CTIE staff are listed below.

As part of the standardization process, our team has made four (invited) presentations at IETF meetings, and chaired one BoF (Birds of Feather Session). Out of this work, the Detecting Network Attachment IETF working group was formed which will cover work undertaken by CTIE staff, with a CTIE member as chair.

Additionally our team has created and released open source software of the following new protocols:

A summary of these activities can be found on the older webpage Mobile IPv6 Research at CTIE

The current major area of research in IPv6 is simulation of networks

Simulations of IPv6, and variations on Mobile IPv6, wireless and ad-hoc/mesh networks as well as large networks in general. A lot of these networks need high performance computing or simulation on large clusters and CTIE has a suitable development environment as well as access to major compute clusters.
