Norma Lucile Forman

by Frances Jean Righter Tucker

Norma Lucile Forman - Righter was born in Brooklyn, NY Jan. 8, 1905. She was five months old when her father died. Her mother thought that Oberlin, Ohio would be a nice college town and a good environment to raise children in-so they moved. Norma went to Oberlin schools from kindergarten through one year of college. Then she and her mother moved to California-where Norma attended Santa Ana Junior College and received her diploma June 1927.

Next came Broadoaks Kindergarten Primary Training School-received a Kindergarten-Primary Credential Class II in February 1928-taught kindergarten for a little over a year, got married, went back to school, and received a Bachelor of Education Degree in June 1921 from Broadoaks School of Education, Whittier College, CA.

Norma had big brown eyes and light blonde hair when she was young. Her hair gradually turned brown. She was and excellent swimmer and did competition events in College. She was the children's choir director at the Glendale, Congregational Church and Congregational Church of the Foothills-when she and Walt moved to the Righter Ranch in Orange, CA.

She was generous, kind and devoted to her church and friends. Norma loved to entertain with dinners, puppet shows, badminton games and unusual parties. She enjoyed writing children's music, stories, plays, monologue and had some success as a writer. (Daughter, Fran, performed the Monologs for her at church programs and for various organizations.)

She met Walter Hammond Righter at a party given by mutual friends. They married June 25, 1929 and lived in Glendale, CA for about 33 years before they moved back to Orange, CA where he died July 11, 1982 and she Feb. 15, 1985. Both died of cancer and are buried at the Fairhaven Cemetery, Orange, CA-adjacent to the old Righter Ranch. (His Father, Mother and Grandmother are also buried there.)

In 1959 still living there, but in a spacious house…In 1947 Walt had bought the little house next door and built the two into one lovely four bedroom home and they "stayed put" for the next thirteen years. "The house after Dad bought the one next door and built the two into one. It shows the bay window where the fake fireplace once was--near the car. I had forgotten the carport. It came much later. The driveway was at least a 3rd longer to the garage. The picture was probably taken because of the snow--a rare thing there. There was a LONG porch across the back of the house."

"You will notice the home has a driveway on both sides. Our original one on the left and the other on the right belonged to our neighbor when we bought their house next door. Dad moved their garage next door to the right where my uncle Lyle , Aunt Clara Louise and cousins, Marilyn and Paul, lived. Lyle Forman was my mother's brother. You can see there drive way on the far right. The drive ways were made with two strips of cement Just wide enough apart for the wheels of the car. Notice how close the strip was to the bay window (far left) after the fake fireplace was turned into a bay window."
